📄 Worksheets & Practice Tests
Understanding polynomials is the foundation of algebra in higher classes. This chapter prepares you for solving equations, understanding algebraic identities, and working with functions in Class 10 and beyond. Strong basics here will make Chapter 3 (Linear Equations) and Class 10 Factorisation much easier!
Did you know? The word “polynomial” comes from the Greek word “poly” (meaning many) and the Latin word “nomial” (meaning terms). So, polynomial = many terms!
Polynomials are algebraic expressions consisting of variables and coefficients, combined using addition, subtraction, and multiplication. This chapter introduces:
Definition of a Polynomial: An expression like axn+bxn−1+…, where a,b,…,k are constants.
Types of Polynomials:
Monomial: Single term (e.g., 3x)
Binomial: Two terms (e.g.,x +2)
Trinomial: Three terms (e.g., x2+3x+2)
Degree of a Polynomial: The highest power of the variable.
Zero Polynomial: A polynomial with all coefficients zero.
Standard Form: Writing terms in descending order of degree.
Polynomial Equation: An equation formed by equating a polynomial to zero.
Factor Theorem: If p(a)=0, then (x−a) is a factor of p(x).
Remainder Theorem: The remainder when p(x) is divided by (x−a) is p(a).
Algebraic Identities:
(a+b)2 =a2+2ab+b2
(a−b)2=a2−2ab+b2
a2−b2=(a−b)(a+b)
These identities are instrumental in simplifying and solving polynomial expressions.
